. Olsen's Scandinavian Foods was
founded by Einar Johnsen in 1960. It was then called B.D.& D. Being
in a Scandinavian community with many fisherman and their families, he
decided he needed a bigger store. In 1963 he moved across the street and
opened a new store which he called Johnsen's Scandinavian Foods. In 1972
Einar decided to retire and move back home to Norway. He then sold the store
to Reidar Olsen.
Reidar kept the name Johnsen's and continued making quality products such as fishcakes, meatballs, pickled herring, sausage and many more foods famous for great taste and superior quality at the Ballard store. In addition to all the homemade foods, there also was a large selection of imported canned goods, gifts, and more. Reidar finally retired in 1992 after twenty years of distributing Scandinavian foods to the Scandinavian community. He then sold the business to his son Erik Olsen. Erik decided to change the name of the store from Johnsen's to his family name... Olsen's. All together the Olsen family kept the store running for over twenty-five years. In 1997 Erik Olsen sold the store to the Endresen sisters, Anita and Reidun, from Sandeid, Norway, who had already been working for the Olsens for almost twenty years starting in 1978. The Endresen sisters kept the good name Olsen's Scandinavian Foods and continued using the same fine recipes that had been passed down to them from the Olsens. |
